Why use a VPN with a Russian IP address while abroad
How NetGuard's Russian IP helps open Gosuslugi, banking apps, Yandex, Avito, Ozon, and Wildberries while you are abroad.
Updated:
A Russian IP from NetGuard helps people use Russian government, banking, work, shopping, and everyday services while abroad. Connecting through a server in Russia changes the public address seen by websites and apps: instead of a foreign IP, the service receives a request from a Russian network.
In short: select Russia in NetGuardVPN. Traffic will go through a Russian server, and websites and apps will see a Russian IP. This helps open familiar services and keep a Russian network region while traveling or living abroad.
How a Russia location works
Without a VPN, a website sees the public IP of a foreign home, mobile, hotel, or office provider. After connecting to NetGuard’s Russia location, the destination sees the exit server’s Russian IP.
Russian services use an IP address for practical tasks such as:
- detecting the connection country and region;
- applying regional access rules;
- selecting a local website version and search results;
- checking a sign-in from a Russian network;
- routing traffic to Russian infrastructure;
- serving resources that restrict foreign IP connections.
Why services pay attention to IP addresses
An IP address can be used for several purposes:
- Region selection. A site chooses local results, language, prices, delivery options, or nearby locations.
- Account security. A sign-in from a new country can trigger an additional check.
- Risk management. Banks and marketplaces compare the IP with the device, sign-in history, payment data, and behavior.
- Technical restrictions. A service or infrastructure provider may limit connections from selected networks or regions.
- Routing. A route from a foreign network to a Russian service can be unstable, while a Russian exit point changes that path.
Yandex states in its help documentation that it uses an IP address to determine a device’s city by default. NetGuard’s Russia location provides the service with a Russian network address and helps keep the expected region.
Gosuslugi and government websites
NetGuard’s Russia location sends requests to Gosuslugi and other government websites from a Russian network. This bypasses restrictions tied to a foreign IP and helps open the portal or app from abroad.
Before signing in:
- type the official address yourself or use the official app;
- check the domain carefully;
- never enter a Gosuslugi password on a page opened from an advertisement or message;
- use a server and client you trust;
- never send account details or verification codes to VPN support.
After connecting, fully close the app or old browser tab and open the service again so the new network address is used from the beginning of the session.
Banking apps
Banking apps use the connection country and network in their security systems. NetGuard’s Russian IP returns traffic to the Russian network region and helps use a banking app abroad without a foreign address.
Use stricter safety rules for financial access:
- use only the official app or a saved bank address;
- never install an app from a chat link;
- never disclose passwords, PINs, or one-time codes;
- do not perform a transaction while an alleged “security employee” is on the phone;
- if a prompt looks unusual, end the session and call the bank using a number from the card or official website.
The Bank of Russia warns about fake bank and government websites and requests for one-time passwords. A VPN cannot recognize social engineering for you.
Yandex, Avito, Ozon, and Wildberries
Yandex uses IP location for automatic region detection, search results, and local information. A Russian exit point restores the Russian regional version and familiar results.
Avito, Ozon, and Wildberries use the connection region together with city and delivery settings. A Russia location is convenient for opening Russian catalogs, account pages, order history, and local offers. Ozon Bank’s privacy policy explicitly lists IP address and geolocation among the technical data it processes.
After connecting, select the required city or delivery address inside the app. The Russian IP sets the network region, while the service profile refines local results.
Ozon and Ozon Bank
A Russian IP is useful for opening the Ozon marketplace, account pages, and related financial services from abroad. NetGuard routes the connection through a Russian exit point, so the request arrives without a foreign IP.
Open Ozon after the connection is established, verify the selected city, and continue using the catalog, orders, and profile in the Russian network region.
What a Russian IP helps you do
Use NetGuard’s Russia location to:
- open a Russian website or app from a foreign network;
- receive the Russian region instead of a foreign one;
- sign in to Gosuslugi or a banking app through a Russian address;
- use Yandex, Avito, Ozon, and Wildberries;
- connect to a Russian work resource;
- replace a foreign route with a connection through Russia.
Connect through Russia with NetGuard
- Open NetGuardVPN on your device.
- Select Russia in the location list.
- Connect and wait for the connected status.
- Fully close the target app, then open it again.
- If the region is unchanged, reset only the service’s location setting or choose a city manually. Avoid deleting a banking app without a reason.
- Return to your usual location afterward if it works better for other sites.
Setup guides are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad, and Android TV.
If an app keeps the old region
- Fully close and reopen the app.
- Reconnect to Russia.
- Confirm that the app is not excluded through split tunneling.
- Start a new private browser session.
- Check the selected city in the service settings.
- Disable another VPN or proxy running alongside NetGuard.
The IP sets the network region, while account details and delivery addresses remain configured inside the service.
Quick checklist
